1.    Intraoral  x rays:
As the name suggests intraoral dental x rays are x ray procedure in which x ray films are kept inside the mouth. It is known to be the most common and widely used x ray techniques. Intraoral x rays helps in detail study of cavities, teeth fractures, bone root and surroundings of a teeth. The status of developing teeth can also be studied by this method.

2.    Extraoral x rays:
Extraoral dental x rays are x ray procedure in which x ray films are kept outside the mouth. Extraoral x rays focus on study of jaw and skull. The detailed study is not possible by the extraoral x ray procedure. This x ray technique is not used for finding cavities or fractures within a single tooth. Instead they are used for monitoring of impacted teeth. It is widely used for visualizing relation of jaws with teeth and treatment for temperomandibular disorders.

Types of Intraoral x rays.

•    Bite-wing x rays
The complete detail of the upper and lower teeth can be shown by bite-wing x rays. That is bite wing x rays captures a photograph of a tooth from its crown to supporting bone that can be visualized from outside. They are used in diagnosis and treatment of decay and bone density changes due to disease. It is also used in determining the proper position of the crown.

•    Periapical x rays
It shows the whole tooth dimension, which is from the crown to inside of the root where the tooth root is fixed t other jaw. X ray of only one portion, either the upper or lower jaw, can be taken at a time. They are used in diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities in root structure.

•    Occlusal x rays
Occlusal x rays gives larger x rays and are used in revealing entire set of teeth in the upper or lower jaw. It shows roof or floor of the teeth giving information on full tooth development and placement.

Types of Extraoral x rays

•    Panoramic x rays
It shows all the teeth including the upper and lower jaw, including the entire sets of teeth in a mouth. . It also visualizes jaws, sinus, nasal areas and temperomandibular joins.  It is used in the diagnosis of treatment and locating position of fully developed or developing tooth.

•    Tomograms
In tomographs X rays can be viewed in slice or sections from different angles.

•    Cephalometric projections
Cephalo means head. So cephalometric projections shows relation of teeth to the jaw.

Digital dental x rays

A newer dental x ray technology has been emerging nowadays called as digital dental x rays. The advantage of digital x rays is that the x ray film is not developed in the dark room but is directly viewed on computers saving time money and energy. The x rays can be stored for further use, can be printed out, or can be electronically send to other dental clinics or departments when needed.
This technique uses less radiation dose compared to conventional method.
An image of a tooth is small if viewed on conventional x ray film. But the same image can be enlarged and enhanced using the digital techniques. Thus micro inspection of a tooth is possible by this technique.
Subtraction angiography allows a dentist to know the tiniest changes that otherwise can’t be noticed by naked eyes.
