X-ray Technologist:–All About Becoming An X-ray Tech!

Let’s hope not but, in case, you had broken your bone or been the victim of some disease during your childhood, then you might probably have paid a visit to an X-ray Technologist. After all, an X-ray Tech or, rather say, a Radiologic Technologist, uphold this exciting medical profession of generating radiograms (i.e. X-ray images) of the inner body parts of the patient for diagnostic purposes.

# Learn the Steps on How to Become an X-ray Technologist or the Radiologic Technologist:–

Step 1:–Meet the Pre-requisites for Enrolling in the Radiology Programs!

In order to pursue the title of an X-ray technician or any other medical career, you must first be equipped with the high-school diploma or a GED certificate. And, of course, it is highly recommended for you to have good grades in science and math subjects, since they are essential for your x-ray technology or, rather say, the radiology program.

Another pre-requisite for enrolling in the radiology programs is to have a clean background, devoid of any crimes, felonies or even drug abuse. Likewise, you must also be in good physical condition, since as an x-ray technician, you may likely have to lift, carry or position the patients.

Step 2:–Complete your X-ray Technician Training Through ARRT Accredited Radiology School!

How to choose a Radiology or X-ray technology program?

When asked, every x-ray technician school would tell you that their program is of the highest quality. Well, their bragging might be genuine but it still would be imprudent of you to enroll in any radiology program, without first ascertaining their accreditation.

Yes, my dear friend, you should enroll only in those radiology programs, which have been graced with the accreditation from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (in short, ARRT).

Which Radiology Certificate Program Is Right For You?

Having the high school diploma in your pocket would certainly make you eligible to join an x-ray technician program. But, at this point, you would have to decide whether to apply for the 2 years long associate’s degree program or the 4 years long bachelor’s degree program in radiology.

As a piece of advice, let me inform you that the associate’s degree used to be the favorite choice for the X-ray Technician-wannabes, owing to its short & sweet schooling period and lesser educational expenses.

But, nowadays, the employers of the reputed healthcare industries are giving more priority to the bachelor’s degree holding X-ray techs, reckoning that the 4 years of radiology training is much better than the 2 years of schooling. Nonetheless, if you want to follow the footsteps of your predecessors, then you are free to choose the associate’s degree radiology program.

Note:–Besides the radiology degree programs, there’s also a certificate program too, which have an accelerated schooling period of around 1 and a half years. But, sad to say, these certificate programs are meant only for the current healthcare practitioners like Registered Nurses (RNs), who wish to attain the credentials of an X-ray technician and, thus, help boost up their employment opportunities.

Course Description of the Radiology Degree Programs:

Like any other medical assistants, the X-ray technicians, during the course of their radiology degree program, had to get acquainted with the course topics like medical terminologies, pathology & charting abbreviations.

And, of course, the students would also need to explore the basics of radiology and its imaging procedures and technical modalities like CT & fluoroscopy, not to mention that an in-depth study of the human anatomy & physiology is also a must for an x-ray tech. After all, the job of an x-ray technician involves taking accurate radiograms or, rather say, x-ray images of internal human body organs for diagnosis purposes.

Being a highly risky medical profession, an X-ray technician must be well versed with their OSHA i.e. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. And, there’s also the patient care course topic, which would educate them about the safety processes like how to protect the patients from exposure to the radiations.

Clinical Internship:–Since the profession of an X-ray technician is of a technical nature, be assured that every ARRT approved radiology program would have the provision of assigning their x-ray technician students to an internship at some local hospitals or medical settings.

And, during this internship, you will get to accumulate hands-on training, under the supervision of professional imaging specialists, on how to generate clear radiograms of patients’ internal organs through the X-ray machine. As an additional competency, most X-ray technicians also get the CPR (i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training. In essence, the internship program would bestow you the golden opportunity to finally learn what it’s like to be in the shoes of an X-ray Technologist.

Step 3:–Becoming a Licensed X-ray Technician or Radiology Technologist!

With the exception of a few, most states don’t require the X-ray technicians to acquire any license, which means that you would be qualified to get hired as an X-ray technician right after your graduation. However, in the absence of the state licensing, the employers of the healthcare industries demand that the X-ray technicians pass the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and thus earn the title of a Registered Radiologic Technologist.

Mobile X-ray Machines:–Benefits & Leading Companies To Buy From!

If not for the mobile x-ray machines, it would indeed have been a great discomfort for the already-in-pain patients to move themselves to the x-ray room in a hospital or such patient-care settings. With the invention of these mobile or, rather say, portable x-ray machines, now, the patients won’t have to take the trouble of visiting the x-ray room but, instead, the healthy x-ray technologist would himself/herself come to you, whether you are in an emergency room, your home or out in the field, for taking the x-ray images of your internal body parts.

How Did the Mobile/Portable X-ray Machine Come Into Existence?

When Frederick Jones, an American mechanical engineer & inventor, chanced to overhear a physician’s displeasure regarding why an x-ray machine could not be moved, then his innovative mind’s wheels began to turn and the year of 1895 was greeted with the first portable x-ray machine.

After the birth of the first portable x-ray machine, its siblings also started to appear, but under different brand names and, of course, in different shape and sizes. In addition, these portable x-ray machines also come with integrated high frequency invertors that supply the power for their operation.

General Idea on How to Operate a Mobile/Portable X-ray Machine:–

Needless to say, the portable x-ray machines are integrated with the modern technologies, and thus have a digital functionality with a user-friendly operating system. What I mean to say is that these modern portable x-ray machines, through the application of their completely filmless laser scanners, save the x-ray images of the patient’s internal body part to a phosphor plate/ cassette integrated in those portable machines.

Now, if you want to have a general idea on how the traditional x-ray machines work, then, let me help you. Briefly speaking, what you have to do is to place an X-ray film (i.e. an image recording plate) underneath the patient’s body part, which has to be x-rayed. Then, fix the X-ray tube of these portable machines in its flexible arm and extend it over the patient’s body part, beneath where the X-ray film is placed. Now, you are all set to take the x-ray.

Discover the Advantages of the Mobile/Portable X-ray Machines:–

Compact & Small in Size with the Portability Feature!

The best thing about the mobile x-ray machines is, doubtless, their movability feature, which is yielded by their compact size. And, besides coming in compact & versatile sizes, the portable x-ray machines are even blessed with the feature of lightness. In fact, an average portable x-ray machine would basically weigh around 40 kilograms.

Portable X-ray Machines are a blessing for the patients & sports player!

Because of their compact sizes, the portable machines can also be moved through between the patients’ beds at a hospital, thus, getting rid of the traditional compulsion for the patients to visit the x-ray room.

What’s more, these portable x-ray machines have even become a part of the major sport activities like football, cricket and wrestling. Generally, a healthcare team, consisting of a x-ray technician along with his portable x-ray machine would be stationed (usually in a van) near the sports field, and, if any of the players perchance to get physically injured, then through the aid of the portable x-ray machine, the health care team would discover whether the injured player has broken or fractured their bone and provide the required medical assistance.

Portable X-ray machines have a User-friendly System with Digital Functionality.

Apart from their celebrated portability feature, the portable x-ray machines are also credited for their easy-to-understand & user-friendly system. And, being made with advanced technologies, these portable x-ray machines utilize the WiFi connection & the computed radiology to generate high-quality radiograms (x-ray images).

Portable X-ray machines have the facility of digital archiving!

Through the application of a filmless laser-scanner, the portable x-ray machines save the x-ray images in their integrated phosphor plates or cassettes, which, you know, can be erased and, thus, reused again for another series of x-ray images. Moreover, the healthcare industries may also transmit the patient’s x-ray images to a central computer for the purpose of record keeping.

Portable X-ray Machines, Thanks To Their Modern Technology, Provide Quick Diagnosis!

Thanks to the digital functionality of the portable x-ray machines, the diagnosis of the patient’s health disorder can be done by the physicians in a fast and more efficient manner. What’s more, the physicians themselves won’t have to be present at the field, since portable x-ray machines, with their laser scanner can swiftly generate the x-ray images of the patient and, then transmit those images through WiFi connection to the central computer of their health industry. This way, physicians would be able to diagnosis the patient’s health disorder even from a remote region.

Leading Companies of Today’s Best Mobile/Portable X-ray Machines:–

MinXray Inc and the Source-Ray Inc are some of the big names, who, at present, happens to be the leading brands of the mobile/portable x-ray equipments and other such digital imaging devices

Apart from these 2 big companies, there are some others, like the MDS digital X-Ray, Kosma Mobile X-Ray, Lackawanna Mobile X-Ray Inc and the American Mobile X-ray, whose high quality & excellent mobile/portable x-ray machines have also found honorable place in the hospitals, nursing homes, doctor’s office, private home and other such applicable places.

By the way, when searching for mobile x-ray machines, you might also stumble upon some web blogs advertizing about the mobile x-ray scanners. You might then become confused on whether all the mobile x-ray machines are just like these scanning mobile phone devices.

Well, to avoid your confusion, let me enlightened you with the fact that these mobile x-ray scanners are a kind of mobile x-ray machines but, as the name itself says, they are just an x-ray scanner inbuilt in a mobile phone. Hence the term mobile x-ray machines define a broad category of portable x-ray devices, among which the mobile x-ray scanner is just a mere example.

Mobile X-ray: New Generation Safety

When X-ray devices were first invented, they used to be really bulky and had an utterly complicated system of wires. The size went on decreasing and the wires went on being simplified. And today we have wireless X-ray devices in front of us. These are portable and are useful at places where there is no electricity. They are usually used by the police and military departments to check suspicious stuff without touching the stuff. It has been said that x-rays are also being built in hand held devices now to ease their duties further. Though they don’t give images with the quality as good as the bulky devices, the pictures are clear enough to locate any unethical or unwanted things. Also during war and such situations where people live in a tent, putting up a whole X-ray machine is impossible. Portable X-rays machines have come as bliss to those people as they are able to carry on their medical check-ups.

Many of mobile x-ray devices don’t even require a dark room nowadays. For example, an x-ray system called nomad-pro produces digital x-ray images, can do its work even in the light during daytime and is light weight weighing about six pounds only. It is not difficult to operate them as well. Unlike the other x-ray devices, it doesn’t require knowledge of computers and software.

Because of the increasing potential dangers of terrorism, the US government is introducing as many measures as possible. Mobile X-rays in vans have come into the scene lately to randomly check people at any place. It is commonly called ZBV by them. They first appeared in September, 2009. They use the same technology as that of the body scanners in airports. And they also get through everything in the body that is beyond the clothing. They are used to investigate cars and houses randomly. They are also expected to be useful in the upcoming big events like London Olympics 2012.

However, these devices have often been criticized by the general population because of its hindrance in personal activities and health hazards caused by the radiation. To some extent the criticism is also sensible, because these machines do cross the privacy line. Though it has its own benefits; now every car doesn’t need to be stopped to check and they can be checked more efficiently. The drivers will not be asked for their license or insurance, and hence lets them a little free. And some benefits have already come into the scene. A few drug scandals and such cases have been solved by this van. During the majority of times, the one who is being inspected doesn’t even know that he is being inspected. But for the health part, constant maintenance of the device has to be done so that the X-rays are comparatively safer. One small negligent act can cause a great injury. Hence, the government has to carry out its responsibility well.

X-rays are getting more and more mobile with the passage of time. In fact in the future, it is even predicted that the smart phones will have X-ray vision. This project of the students at University of Texas Dallas is likely to enable the next generation with superheroes’ power. 50 years back, nobody had predicted that x-ray machines would develop to the present extent. Hence, we never know what happens in the next 50 years. All we can do is wait and watch. But with this pace, development is bound to happen.
