X-ray Technologist:–All About Becoming An X-ray Tech!

Let’s hope not but, in case, you had broken your bone or been the victim of some disease during your childhood, then you might probably have paid a visit to an X-ray Technologist. After all, an X-ray Tech or, rather say, a Radiologic Technologist, uphold this exciting medical profession of generating radiograms (i.e. X-ray images) of the inner body parts of the patient for diagnostic purposes.

# Learn the Steps on How to Become an X-ray Technologist or the Radiologic Technologist:–

Step 1:–Meet the Pre-requisites for Enrolling in the Radiology Programs!

In order to pursue the title of an X-ray technician or any other medical career, you must first be equipped with the high-school diploma or a GED certificate. And, of course, it is highly recommended for you to have good grades in science and math subjects, since they are essential for your x-ray technology or, rather say, the radiology program.

Another pre-requisite for enrolling in the radiology programs is to have a clean background, devoid of any crimes, felonies or even drug abuse. Likewise, you must also be in good physical condition, since as an x-ray technician, you may likely have to lift, carry or position the patients.

Step 2:–Complete your X-ray Technician Training Through ARRT Accredited Radiology School!

How to choose a Radiology or X-ray technology program?

When asked, every x-ray technician school would tell you that their program is of the highest quality. Well, their bragging might be genuine but it still would be imprudent of you to enroll in any radiology program, without first ascertaining their accreditation.

Yes, my dear friend, you should enroll only in those radiology programs, which have been graced with the accreditation from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (in short, ARRT).

Which Radiology Certificate Program Is Right For You?

Having the high school diploma in your pocket would certainly make you eligible to join an x-ray technician program. But, at this point, you would have to decide whether to apply for the 2 years long associate’s degree program or the 4 years long bachelor’s degree program in radiology.

As a piece of advice, let me inform you that the associate’s degree used to be the favorite choice for the X-ray Technician-wannabes, owing to its short & sweet schooling period and lesser educational expenses.

But, nowadays, the employers of the reputed healthcare industries are giving more priority to the bachelor’s degree holding X-ray techs, reckoning that the 4 years of radiology training is much better than the 2 years of schooling. Nonetheless, if you want to follow the footsteps of your predecessors, then you are free to choose the associate’s degree radiology program.

Course Description of the Radiology Degree Programs:

Like any other medical assistants, the X-ray technicians, during the course of their radiology degree program, had to get acquainted with the course topics like medical terminologies, pathology & charting abbreviations.

And, of course, the students would also need to explore the basics of radiology and its imaging procedures and technical modalities like CT & fluoroscopy, not to mention that an in-depth study of the human anatomy & physiology is also a must for an x-ray tech. After all, the job of an x-ray technician involves taking accurate radiograms or, rather say, x-ray images of internal human body organs for diagnosis purposes.

Being a highly risky medical profession, an X-ray technician must be well versed with their OSHA i.e. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. And, there’s also the patient care course topic, which would educate them about the safety processes like how to protect the patients from exposure to the radiations.

Clinical Internship:–Since the profession of an X-ray technician is of a technical nature, be assured that every ARRT approved radiology program would have the provision of assigning their x-ray technician students to an internship at some local hospitals or medical settings.

And, during this internship, you will get to accumulate hands-on training, under the supervision of professional imaging specialists, on how to generate clear radiograms of patients’ internal organs through the X-ray machine. As an additional competency, most X-ray technicians also get the CPR (i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training. In essence, the internship program would bestow you the golden opportunity to finally learn what it’s like to be in the shoes of an X-ray Technologist.

Step 3:–Becoming a Licensed X-ray Technician or Radiology Technologist!

With the exception of a few, most states don’t require the X-ray technicians to acquire any license, which means that you would be qualified to get hired as an X-ray technician right after your graduation. However, in the absence of the state licensing, the employers of the healthcare industries demand that the X-ray technicians pass the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and thus earn the title of a Registered Radiologic Technologist.
